The USDA recently canceled $1 billion in funding that allowed schools and food banks to buy food from local suppliers, amid other devastating funding and food cuts for Share and many food banks like us.

“Ultimately, the $1 billion cut is not just trimming the fat,” explains Jess Bautista, chief communications officer at Share Food Program. “This is directly targeting hungry children, hungry families and farmers — while hunger is already rising. All of this is happening at the same time when they’re proposing cuts to SNAP, to WIC, to school meals.”

While yesterday was so called “liberation day” the tariffs have already had a devastating impact on organizations like Share Food Program. We are seeing unprecedented cancellations of $6 - $7 million in food that was supposed to come to us. So this “liberation day” really was a day of oppression and withholding crucial resources and nutrients from the American people.

Despite the fact that food banks are handling unprecedented demand as U.S. hunger rates climb, the USDA nixed two pandemic-era programs — Local Food for Schools and Local Food Purchase Assistance.

These programs provided more than $1 billion in funding for schools and food banks to buy from local farmers & ranchers.

Share Food Program is at risk of losing $8 million of total food & funding for the next fiscal year due to these various cuts. That could mean up to 20% - 25% cut in the total amount of food that we’ll be able to provide.

This would rip food resources away from the hundreds of thousands of people in the five-county Greater Philadelphia region who rely on us through our network of 100+ food pantries & about 800 schools.

In 2023, 13.5% of Americans experienced food insecurity at some point, the highest rate in nearly a decade, according to the most recent USDA data.
