Share Food Program to Host Delaware County Food Drive, Calls for Community Support

Beginning in March 2023, Share Food Program—the leading food hunger-relief provider in Delaware County—is collecting food donations to help feed families in the region.
The rate of hunger in Delaware County continues to rise, especially as the cost of food and overall inflation surges. That’s why Share Food Program is bolstering its efforts to feed as many vulnerable individuals as possible.
“We’re always looking for ways to remove the barriers between people and the nourishment they need; to really build food security in our communities. And we know we can make the biggest impact when the community chips in, too,” said Ellie Crowell, Share Food Program’s Delaware County Program Director.
Share Food Program has invited schools, libraries, grocery stores, restaurants, government and others to participate by hosting one or more 20-gallon collection barrels in easily-accessible areas. The organization would then redistribute to local pantries and families.
Through critical partnerships with 32 pantries and food sites in Delaware County, Share provides nearly 140,000 pounds of free food to folks each month. In the last year, the organization has witnessed a jump in the number of people turning to its pantries in all of the counties it serves—a 70 percent increase in Delaware County alone.
“There’s never a shortage of people to feed and ideas for how we can help, but we always need more food to get onto our neighbors’ tables,” said George Matysik, executive director of Share Food Program, noting that the organization has been working hard to offset a recent reduction in the amount of food it has been receiving.
Share’s distributed food comes from government partners, supermarkets, wholesalers, restaurants, farms, and food drives like this.
Items most in need for the food drive include shelf-stable and canned goods, cooking oils and spices, food for special diets, coffee, tea, water, and non-food products like hygiene care items, paper products, diapers, PPE, and pet food.
This year’s DelCo Food Drive is one among various endeavors underway to fight hunger in the County. Share is currently renovating an 9,000-square-foot warehouse in Ridley Township that will operate as the region’s dedicated food bank.
Share Food Program is grateful to the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce for their support in helping us connect with this year’s food drive participants.
