Press Release: Share Food Program Receives $100,000 Department of Energy Grant to Enhance Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

Share is the only Pennsylvania-based organization to receive this grant award.
PHILADELPHIA – December 30, 2024 – Share Food Program (Share) today announced it has received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support critical improvement projects for its historic North Philadelphia warehouse that serves as its headquarters.
Share is one of 22 community-based nonprofit organizations out of 738 applicants in the country to receive the grant, which is part of the Building Upgrades Inspire Local Transformation (BUILT) Nonprofits initiative under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and the $50 million Renew America’s Nonprofits Program. Share is the only Pennsylvania-based organization to be awarded a grant.
Improvements funded by the grant will be aimed at essential upgrades to Share’s mechanical systems, reducing energy use, and generating both short and long-term energy cost savings. The savings will allow Share to redirect operational dollars toward its mission-critical work of fighting hunger and food insecurity in the Philadelphia region.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration and the Department of Energy for this generous grant,” said George Matysik, executive director of Share Food Program. “This funding will not only help Share push toward cleaner energy and lower utility bills, but it also allows us to operate more sustainably and funnel more resources into programs that feed hundreds of thousands of vulnerable neighbors every month, especially children and seniors.”
The BUILT Nonprofits initiative underscores the importance of strong, healthy nonprofits in building strong, healthy communities. Many nonprofits, including Share, operate on limited budgets while managing high operational costs. This grant will provide much-needed relief and support Share’s efforts to create a more sustainable and efficient operation while extending services to as many people as possible.
The funded improvements are part of a broader efficiency undertaking at Share, which will include the installation of energy-efficient lighting, appliances, and equipment, as well as a new insulated roof and updated windows and doors.
