PHILADELPHIA, PA – March 8, 2023 – In his inaugural budget, Gov. Josh Shapiro proposed crucial funding for public schools, including free breakfast for all students and free lunches for qualifying children.

Gov. Shapiro is calling for $38.5 million to continue the state’s Universal Free Breakfast Program for 1.7 million PA kids and cover the full cost of lunches for 22,000 students who qualify for reduced-price lunches.

“At Share Food Program, we support every investment into nourishing our communities’ children. No child should worry about any stigma surrounding free or reduced meal programs at school, and no child should go hungry,” said Cat Bartoli, RD, LDN, deputy chief program officer at Share Food Program.

“Healthy, accessible meals, means healthy minds and bodies for our next generation of leaders. That’s why Share Food Program prioritizes the nourishment of kids throughout the Greater Philadelphia region, and urges all of our elected officials to do the same throughout our state and country.”

Through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Share Food Program distributes USDA commodity foods to nearly 800 schools in our city and throughout the Philadelphia region. We also serve children and their families through our network of pantries and SNAP-Ed partnerships.
